Melanotan II
Melanotan II is a cyclic seven-amino-acid analogue of alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone. Cyclic means part of the molecule forms a ring. It acts on melanocortin pathways, which influence more than skin pigment. It should not be confused with a cosmetic self-tanner or with a sunscreen.
A 1996 pilot involved only three male volunteers and measured pigmentation as well as tolerability. It reported tanning activity, nausea and other effects, including prolonged erections and fatigue. A three-person early-phase study cannot establish the long-term safety of cosmetic use.
